Departments
 
The college has eleven teaching departments offering undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. The departments of Botany and Zoology are also research centres of the University of Kerala. Eight departments running postgraduate courses maintain separate libraries, laboratories, and other essential facilities. Since the college is an affiliated institution, all its academic programmes are designed by the University.
Botany
Department of BotanyThe department began functioning on 20 June 1946 with an undergraduate programme in Botany. Now, it has emerged as a research department affiliated to the University of Kerala with 5 teachers available for research supervision.
The department specialises in subjects such as
• Microbiology
• Biotechnology
• Genetics
• Plant Physiology
• Seed Germination Studies and
• Taxonomy

The department conducts ongoing research projects in these areas in collaboration with government as well as commercial agencies. A highlight is a study of medicinal plants conducted for S. D. Pharmacy, Alappuzha.

Chemistry
Department of ChemistryThe department started functioning on 1 June 1957 and is now a department offering undergraduate and postgraduate training in Chemistry. There are also research projects conducted in collaboration with various government and non-governmental agencies. Considering the importance of Kuttanad region of Kerala where the college is situated, the department undertook a study of water pollution in the river Pampa and soil pollution in the paddy fields in collaboration with CUSAT and the Agricultural Department of the Government of Kerala.

Another area that the department focuses on is Polymer Chemistry. There are approved research guides who supervise Ph. D. projects in that area. The department specialises in subjects such as

• Marine Food Chemistry

The department is preparing for recognition as a research department.

Commerce
Department of CommerceThe department was established on 20 June 1946 and is now a department offering undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Commerce. The department offers two undergraduate programmes with specific thrust on Taxation Law and Practice. It has pursued research projects in the areas of Banking and the financial structure of the ailing Cooperative movement in Kerala. Many on the faculty are resource persons regularly invited by the government to impart training to entrepreneurs.

Economics
Department of EconomicsThe department was established on 6 January 1965 and is now offering an undergraduate and a postgraduate course in Economics. The department specialises in Agricultural Economics and Growth Economics. It has also studied Decentralised Planning, and the Economy of Kerala in great detail.

Department of EnglishThe department was established on 20 June 1946 and now offers two undergraduate and a post graduate course in English Studies. The department also offers the compulsory English Language course for undergraduate students. The B.A. Course in Communicative English gives advanced training to students in modern media. The department is also equipped with an audio visual studio.

There are two research guides in the department, which is now preparing to become an approved research centre of the University of Kerala. The areas of specialisation are
• Literary Theory
• Film Studies
• Visual Communication and the New Media
• Cultural Studies
• Gender Studies
• Environmentalism and Ecological Criticism
• English Literary Studies

The department has conducted studies in the ecological awareness among students, and the collusion of tribal culture and literature.

Department of HindiThe department was established as a full-fledged department offering an undergraduate course on 20 July 1981. The department has the singular distinction of having very high success rates in the University examinations. The areas of specialisation are

Malayalam & Sanskrit
Department of MalayalamEstablished on 1 June 1968 with a Bachelor course in Malayalam, the department has spearheaded cultural change in the district. The department works for the promotion of the traditional arts and literature of Kerala and conducts regular workshops for increasing awareness of these art forms among the students. The areas of specialisation are

Physical Education
Department of Physical EducationThe college has a physical education department with facilities for major sports and games like water sports, Power Lifting, Cricket, Basket Ball, Table Tennis, Shuttle Badminton, Kabaddi, and Athletics. The college has a multi gymnasium, a cricket pitch, a concrete Basket Ball court, a Volley Ball court, a Kabaddi court, etc. There are also facilities for recreation like Caroms and Table Tennis arranged in the students’ common room.

The Department of Physical Education has consistently won awards and honours in many sports and games events. Students from the college have won gold medals at national level in Rowing, have been champions at the university level in Cricket, and have been champions in Power lifting.

Mr. P. Sunil Kumar, Lecturer in Physical Education has been selected as international referee for Kabaddi by World Kabaddi Federation. Mr. Shyamlal P. R. formerly of the College Cricket Team has been selected as National Level Coach for Cricket by Netaji Subhash National Institute of Sports, Patiala.

Physics
Department of PhysicsEstablished on 10 June 1950, the department currently runs two undergraduate courses, one in Pure Physics and the other in Optical Instrumentation, and a Postgraduate programme in Physics. The Post Graduate block including Laboratory Facilities, Library and Seminar Hall has been constructed under the sponsorship of Sri. S. D. Shibulal, Co-founder and Director, Infosys Technologies Ltd., a prominent alumnus of the college.

Zoology
Department of ZoologyThe department was established on 20 June 1946 and now offers B.Sc. and M.Sc. courses in Zoology. The department is a research department of the University of Kerala and has research guides working here. The department also collaborates with the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, CSIR, Sri Chitra Institute, Trivandrum and other premier institutions and agencies for research projects. The contributions of the department to research in Atherosclerosis and the scientific as well as commercial utilization of Water Hyacinth have already been widely acclaimed.
